WALTER G. NESLTER FOR CITY COUNCIL, 18th DISTRICT / BRONX, NEW YORK

Walter Nestler is dedicated to improving the overall quality of life in the 18th New York City Council District of the Bronx. As a third generation resident of Clason Point, Walter was raised, educated and now maintains his professional office in this City Council District. Having lived almost his entire life here in this neighborhood, he is intimately familiar with the needs of this multi-ethnic and culturally diverse community. Walter strives to serve our community by listening to the needs and concerns of residents and business owners, and responding effectively with the goal of improving the quality of life in this part of the Southeast Bronx.

Walter began his education at P.S. 69 and went on to graduate from Saint Raymond’s High School. After receiving an Associate’s degree from the State University of New York at Farmingdale he continued on to the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse University where he received bachelor’s degrees in both Environmental Studies and Landscape Architecture. During his tenure with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Walter continued earning credits toward a Masters degree in Urban Planning at Hunter College.

The summer prior to entering college, Walt worked for Lebenthal Municipal Bond Company in lower Manhattan where he gained valuable knowledge of the financial municipal bond industry. While in college, he held multiple part time and work-study jobs during the school year and various full time construction-related positions during the summer months. Upon completion of his education in 1978, he joined the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation Capital Projects Division where he gained unparallel experience in both the construction contract and design programs within that agency. This opportunity provided a unique understanding and a hands-on experience working directly with the NYC budget process, implementation of community design initiatives and administration of public work contracts.

The office of Walter G. Nestler Landscape Architect P.C. was established in 1985 as the first Landscape Architecture firm to locate in the Bronx. To this day his office remains the only professional Landscape Architect office in our borough. Walter felt then, as he does now, that it is important to have professional design offices locate and do business in our city’s outer boroughs. In his private practice, he has had several consultant contracts with the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation and NYC Dept. of Sanitation. His institutional work in the Bronx includes consultant designs for a number of projects constructed on the Montefiore Hospital Campus. His residential design work is well known and established throughout the New York Metropolitan area. He currently holds active professional licenses in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and has maintained membership in the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for more than thirty years.

In 2006, Walter was appointed as a member on Community Planning Board 9. His intimate knowledge of the inner workings and processes of city agencies has proven to be invaluable for the Community Board. Walter’s professional background reflects his unique mix of planning and environmental design experience, complemented by his involvement in community organizations and activism. Walt Nestler believes that the Southeast Bronx should be a livable, workable and beautiful community for all its residents.
